The best electric scooters for commuting 2027 for most people is the Segway Ninebot Max G3. ERideHero measured 28 mph, 24.9 miles of real range, a 3.5 hour charge and a 10.8 ft braking distance, and it has hydraulic suspension, 11 inch self-sealing tires and an IPX6 rating. If you want to spend less, the Navee ST3 Pro is ERideHero's value commuter, though it takes 10 hours to charge. If you carry your scooter up stairs or onto a train, the NIU KQi Air is the light one at 26.4 lb.

Those are my picks for the best commuter electric scooters 2027, and I chose them for the numbers that matter on a commute: tested range, braking, how long they take to charge, and how heavy they are to carry. Top speed matters far less than most lists suggest, because most city commutes never get near it. I haven't ridden these scooters. Every figure here comes from published tests by ERideHero and Electric Scooter Guide, plus a few first-impression reports and maker pages, and I say which is which.

One warning up front. Claimed range is the number most likely to mislead you. ERideHero says claimed range is often 40 to 60 percent higher than real-world range, and Electric Scooter Guide measured 21.2 miles on a scooter whose maker claims up to 56. So I rank by tested range.

Best electric scooters for commuting 2027 at a glance#

Speed, range, braking and charge time are tested figures from ERideHero (a 175 lb rider, GPS-logged) unless the row says otherwise. Prices are the figures in the named source, they conflict between sources, and they change with sales.

The Max G3 Plus range comes from a different test (Electric Scooter Guide, a 200 lb rider in Sport mode with hills) so don't compare it directly with ERideHero's numbers.

How I chose these commuter scooters and what I trust#

A commuter scooter is a tool you use twice a day, so I weighed the things that fail on a commute.

  1. Tested range, not claimed range. The tested range is what you get from a rider on real roads. ERideHero measures regular, fast and eco riding separately, which is more honest than one number.
  2. Braking. ERideHero's braking distances run from 10.7 ft to 12.4 ft for the scooters here, and Electric Scooter Guide measured 13 to 14 ft from about 16 mph on the Max G3 Plus. Shorter is better, but the test speeds differ, so I don't rank on this.
  3. Charge time. If you charge at work or overnight, this matters less. If you have a tight turnaround, it matters a lot, and I give it its own section.
  4. Weight and fold. The 26 lb to 57 lb spread decides whether you can take the scooter upstairs.
  5. Weather and build. IP ratings and tire type tell you whether a rainy commute is realistic.

How the sources differ: ERideHero uses a 175 lb rider and a GPS logger on a controlled course. In its Max G3 Plus review, Electric Scooter Guide used a heavier rider, about 200 lb, on a hilly, stop-and-go course, so that range number is lower. Levy's commuting page lists five scooters with maker figures and no tests, and it says non-Levy specs "change often." I treat that page and any "up to" range as claims. Where the sources disagree on price or rating, I show both.

Best electric scooters for commuting 2027: my picks#

Segway Ninebot Max G3: best all-round commuter#

ERideHero tested the Max G3 at 28 mph (matching Segway's claim), 24.9 miles of regular-riding range (Segway claims 50), 19.7 miles riding fast and 28.7 miles in eco mode. It does 0 to 20 mph in 6.5 seconds, climbed ERideHero's test hill at 16.2 mph, and stopped in 10.8 ft. The battery is 597 Wh and it charges in 3.5 hours. It has 11 inch tubeless self-healing tires, adjustable hydraulic suspension front and rear, IPX6 water resistance, a 286 lb rider limit and a weight of 54.2 lb.

The price depends on the day. ERideHero's metadata shows "from $999.99," Electric Scooter Guide's list shows about $1,399, and RiderGuide's March 2025 first-impressions article reported an $899 pre-order price rising to $1,399. RiderGuide's article was first impressions only, with no range test, so I used it for charging details only. The G3 is the one I'd buy for a daily commute of up to about 10 miles each way, because the tested range leaves a margin.

ERideHero labels the ST3 Pro its best value commuter, and tested it at 24.8 mph, 24.9 miles, 55 lb and a 17 percent hill climbed with "plenty of performance headroom." Its battery is 596.7 Wh, its front brake is a drum and its rear suspension is rubber, with a braking distance of 11.5 ft. Electric Scooter Guide lists it at about $949. The catch is the charge time. ERideHero lists 10 hours, against 3.5 for the Max G3, so it is a scooter you charge overnight, not in the morning.

NIU KQi 300X: hills, wet weather and heavier riders#

ERideHero's review (published September 26, 2024, updated February 20, 2026) scores the KQi 300X 8.7 and calls it one of the most well-rounded suspension commuters under $1,000. Tested: 23.6 mph (NIU claims 23.7), 26.8 miles (30.4 in range priority mode, and NIU claims 37.3), 15.4 mph on an 8 percent hill and a 10.7 ft stop, the best braking of the group. It is a 608 Wh pack that charges in 6 hours, at 48.7 lb, with a folded size of 46.2 by 21.3 by 21.3 inches. The reviewer rates its folding mechanism as arguably the best he has tried. The cons are no rear suspension and no electronic horn. ERideHero's page lists the IP rating as IP55 in the table and IP66 in the text, so check it if you ride in heavy rain. Electric Scooter Guide's list shows $999.

NIU KQi Air: best ultralight commuter#

At 26.4 lb, the KQi Air is the only scooter here you can carry up stairs without effort. ERideHero measured 20.1 mph, 24.2 miles regular, 18.5 miles fast and 27.3 in eco mode, from a 451.2 Wh battery that charges in 5 hours. Its tested hill climb speed was 7.9 mph and it stopped in 12.4 ft, the longest here, and it has 9.5 inch tubeless tires and no adjustable suspension. The page header shows "from $809.10," which may be out of date. NIU rates it for 17 degrees. It is the lightest scooter in my sources with a tested range above 24 miles. See my lightweight scooter guide for more.

Vmax VX2 Hub (18.2 Ah): longest tested range here#

ERideHero's best-scooters page lists the larger-battery VX2 Hub at 33.5 mph, 35.6 miles and 57.1 lb, with a 17 mph hill result. The smaller 13 Ah version (642 Wh) tested at 25.4 miles regular and 21.4 miles fast, with an 11.4 ft stop, IPX6 and a 287 lb rider limit, and its page metadata says "from $1,079.10." Electric Scooter Guide lists the VX2 Hub at $1,199. It has a front drum brake, hydraulic front and rubber rear suspension, and 10 inch tubeless tires that aren't self-healing. I'd choose the 18.2 Ah version only if you need the range, since it is heavier and costs more. For more range options, see my long-range scooter guide.

Segway Max G3 Plus: the newer Segway#

Electric Scooter Guide reviewed the Max G3 Plus on August 4, 2026 and scored it 98 out of 100. It indicated 28 mph (GPS about 1 mph lower), and ran 21.2 miles with a 200 lb rider in Sport mode, against Segway's claim of up to 56 miles. About 18 of those miles were at high speed and the last 3 were heavily restricted. It has a 717 Wh battery (597 Wh on the G3), 11 inch self-sealing tires, hydraulic suspension front and rear, IPX6, front and rear turn signals, a 55.1 lb weight, a 13 to 14 ft stop from about 16 mph, and a 170 lux headlight. It charges in about 4 hours, and it launched at $1,149.99 against a $1,499.99 MSRP. ESG's cons include a kicktail that moves separately from the deck, a boost mode you have to arm by hand, and being heavy for stairs. The G3 Plus tested range is short of the claim, so I'd buy it for features and not for distance.

Best commuter electric scooters 2027: comparison of tested numbers#

Here are the tested figures side by side, with one calculation of my own. Watt-hours per mile is battery capacity divided by tested regular-riding range, and lower means the scooter uses less energy for each mile.

ScooterBatteryTested rangeWh per mile (my math)BrakingIP rating
Max G3597 Wh24.9 mi24.010.8 ftIPX6
ST3 Pro596.7 Wh24.9 mi24.011.5 ftIPX5
KQi 300X608 Wh26.8 mi22.710.7 ftIP55
KQi Air451.2 Wh24.2 mi18.612.4 ftIP55
VX2 Hub 13 Ah642 Wh25.4 mi25.311.4 ftIPX6

The Air stands out for efficiency, which makes sense for a light scooter at a lower top speed. The Max G3 Plus isn't in the table because its range test used a heavier rider and a hillier course, which made it about 34 Wh per mile on my math (717 Wh over 21.2 miles). That is a different test, not a worse scooter.

Best electric scooters for daily commuting 2027: how far you really need#

For the best electric scooters for daily commuting 2027, range is the number to plan around, and a simple way is to start with your round trip. If you can't charge at work, you need the full round trip from a single charge. If you can, you need only one way plus a margin.

Here is a rule I'd use, and it is my own advice and not a tested standard: pick a scooter whose tested regular-riding range is at least 1.5 times your round trip if you can't charge at work. Tested range assumes a 175 lb rider on a flat, controlled course, so a heavier rider, hills, stops or fast riding will take miles off. Electric Scooter Guide's G3 Plus test, with a 200 lb rider, hills and Sport mode, got 21.2 miles, which shows how much the test conditions move the result. Expect your own number to vary.

On the tested numbers here, a 5 mile each way commute (10 miles round trip) is comfortable on any of them. A 10 mile each way commute with no charging at work is about the limit for the 24 to 27 mile scooters, and the Vmax VX2 Hub 18.2 Ah (35.6 miles) is the one with margin. If you commute a lot farther, see my long-range scooters.

How long the trip takes is a separate question. See my guide on how long it takes to scooter a mile.

Fast charging electric scooters for commuting to work 2027#

If you want fast charging electric scooters for commuting to work 2027, the honest answer is that charge time is rarely tested and often claimed. Here is what I found.

ScooterCharge timeSource
Segway Max G33.5 hERideHero page
Segway Max G3 (two chargers)About 2.5 hEstimate in RiderGuide's first impressions, not tested
Segway Max G3 PlusAbout 4 hESG review, approximate
NIU KQi Air5 hERideHero page
NIU KQi 300X6 hERideHero page
Navee ST3 Pro10 hERideHero comparison page

RiderGuide says the Max G3 ships with two chargers and supports dual charging, which it estimates at about 2.5 hours, but its article was first impressions with no tests, and I haven't seen that time measured. ScooterRank's charge-time ranking lists several models, including the Levy scooter, the Acer Predator ES Storm Pro and the Vmax VX5 Pro LT, at 2.5 hours, but the page doesn't say whether those figures are tested or claimed, or when they were collected.

A useful way to compare is average charging power, which is battery watt-hours divided by charge hours. That is my own rough math, since real chargers run at a higher power early and taper off. It works out to about 171 W for the Max G3 (597 Wh over 3.5 h), 101 W for the KQi 300X, 90 W for the KQi Air and 60 W for the ST3 Pro. So the ST3 Pro charges at about a third of the speed of the G3. If you need to top up between shifts, the G3 is the quickest I found with a test behind it. For the cost of charging, see my guide on what it costs to charge a scooter, and for battery life, see how to make your scooter battery last longer.

Best electric scooters for city use 2027: what matters in traffic#

City riding is stop-and-go, with potholes, wet paint and cars, so some features matter more than top speed.

  • Braking. Tested stopping distances range from 10.7 ft (KQi 300X) to 12.4 ft (KQi Air) at ERideHero. A shorter stop gives you more margin when a car door opens.
  • Lights and signals. Electric Scooter Guide measured the G3 Plus headlight at 170 lux at 6 ft and notes front and rear turn signals. ERideHero's page praises the KQi 300X's headlight visibility. Check for a bright headlight, a brake light and turn signals if you ride at dusk.
  • Tires. ERideHero lists tubeless tires on the Max G3, ST3 Pro, KQi 300X, KQi Air and VX2 Hub, and self-healing tires on the Max G3 and KQi Air. ESG lists the G3 Plus as self-sealing. That cuts the chance of a flat on a commute. If you do get one, my flat tire guide helps.
  • Suspension. Hydraulic suspension (Max G3, KQi 300X front) takes the edge off broken pavement. ESG notes the G3 Plus is harsh on gravel and loose surfaces, so it is an on-road scooter.
  • Weather. The IPX6 Max G3 and VX2 Hub are the best-rated here for rain. See my waterproof commuter guide for more.

A top speed above about 20 mph is something you'll rarely use between traffic lights, and ERideHero's tested scooters here range from 20.1 to 33.5 mph. Levy's commuting page says most city commutes are capped at 15 to 20 mph, though it gives no source for that.

Best electric scooters for adult commuting 2027: weight, size and rider limits#

For the best electric scooters for adult commuting 2027, check the rider limit and the deck as well as the speed. The Max G3 is rated for 286 lb and the VX2 Hub 13 Ah for 287 lb, according to ERideHero. ERideHero says the KQi 300X has a spacious deck for riders of all sizes. I didn't find a rider limit in my sources for the ST3 Pro, KQi 300X or KQi Air, so check the maker's page. See my weight limit guide to see why the limit matters.

Weight is the other adult question. In order, from lightest: KQi Air 26.4 lb, KQi 300X 48.7 lb, Max G3 54.2 lb, VX2 Hub 13 Ah 54.9 lb, ST3 Pro 55 lb, Max G3 Plus 55.1 lb, VX2 Hub 18.2 Ah 57.1 lb. Electric Scooter Guide lists the Max G3 Plus as "heavy for daily stair carries or train transfers," and at 54 to 57 lb that goes for the whole group except the Air and, to a degree, the 300X. The KQi 300X folds to 46.2 by 21.3 by 21.3 inches and the Air to 44.9 by 21.3 by 18.9 inches. If you use stairs or trains every day, the Air is the choice, and otherwise a heavier scooter with a bigger battery is easier to live with.

Locking it up and keeping it safe#

A scooter left outside is a theft target, so plan how you'll lock it. Electric Scooter Guide notes the G3 Plus has Apple Find My, proximity unlock and a built-in alarm. A review of a different scooter on The Gadgeteer makes the point that digital locking and tracking don't replace a physical lock or secure storage, and I agree. ERideHero's KQi 300X page mentions no security features beyond its folding lock. See my guide to locking up an electric scooter, and if you can, bring the scooter inside.

Safety, rules and gear#

Wear a helmet every ride and check the brakes and tires before you leave. A commuter scooter has a big battery, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission counted at least 208 micromobility fire or overheating incidents in 39 states between January 2021 and November 2022, with at least 19 deaths, 5 of them involving e-scooters, in a December 2022 CPSC news release. It asked manufacturers to certify to UL standards, including UL 2272. I couldn't verify certification for the scooters here, so check the box or the maker's page, and charge on a hard surface, not on a bed or a couch.

I haven't summarized state or city rules on where you can ride, speed caps, helmets or age limits, because they differ widely and I couldn't find reliable official summaries. Check your local rules before you commute, especially for sidewalks and bike lanes. My guide on age limits and rules is a start. If you are weighing a bike, see the best electric bikes for commuting.
