There are two different companies behind "KTM", and that decides what a ktm 2027 electric bike search should mean. KTM-branded pedal e-bikes, the Macina range, are made by KTM Fahrrad GmbH in Mattighofen, Austria. According to the company, it has been independent of the motorcycle maker since 1992, is owned by the Urkauf family and was not part of the 2024 insolvency of KTM AG, the motorcycle business. The electric motorcycles, the SX-E and Freeride E, belong to the motorcycle side. KTM AG's parent group has been through a restructuring and is now controlled by Bajaj.
The practical result is that KTM bicycles are still being made, but independent tests of the current bikes are thin and the oldest ones I could find date from 2017. So this guide covers both sides, shows what each source says, and separates tested figures from claims.
I haven't ridden any of these bikes. Everything below comes from Electric Bike Review, ebike-mtb, MBR, Velomotion, Bicycle Retailer, PowersportsBusiness, ride-MTB, Cycling Industry News, ebike24 (a retailer), Wikipedia and statements from the companies themselves, which I label as claims. Prices are what the named source listed in the year it wrote, not live prices. Checked October 10, 2026.

KTM electric bike 2027: which KTM do you mean?#
| KTM e-bikes (pedal-assist) | KTM electric motorcycles | |
|---|---|---|
| Maker | KTM Fahrrad GmbH, Mattighofen, Austria | KTM AG (motorcycle group) |
| Examples | Macina Kapoho, Prowler, Gran, Tour, Style | SX-E 5, Freeride E |
| Motor | Bosch, per ebike24's 2026 lineup | Maker electric motor |
| Parent situation | Independent, family-owned (company statement) | Restructured; Bajaj took control in 2025 |
| Where to ride | Roads and trails under e-bike rules | Mostly off-road models (Wikipedia also lists a street E-SM version) |
The names are close enough that the bicycle company had to publish a clarification in November 2024. After reports about Pierer Mobility's finances, KTM Fahrrad GmbH said it "has no relationship whatsoever with Pierer Mobility AG or KTM AG" and that it had been completely independent for over 30 years (Velomotion, November 28, 2024). Its own clarification page says only KTM Fahrrad GmbH makes KTM bicycles and e-bikes.
Those are the company's statements. A 2018 Trend article described a legal dispute between the two over trademark rights, and Unternehmerblatt's October 2025 article, which is marked as AI-assisted, says Austria's Supreme Court confirmed in 2020 that the bike company has the exclusive worldwide right to the KTM name for bicycles. Wikipedia calls the bike company an exclusive licensee, so the sources differ on the legal wording. I use "independent" with that caveat.
Whichever one you want, the answer for a 2027 buyer is the same shape: read the maker, the motor and the support network before you read the badge.
How I chose these bikes and what the sources did#
I covered the e-bikes that have independent tests I could read (Macina Kapoho, Lycan and Prowler Exonic), the 2026 lineup as a retailer describes it, and the two electric motorcycle families that KTM AG still lists.
My rules:
- Tested and claimed stay separate. Most reviews here print the spec sheet and then give impressions, so I say which is which.
- Old tests are labelled as old. The Lycan review is of a 2017 bike, the Kapoho reviews are 2020 and 2021 and the Prowler test is 2023. They tell you how KTM builds bikes, not how the 2026 versions ride.
- Maker-curated test lists are not independent. KTM Fahrrad's own tests page lists good scores, but it is curated by the company.
- Retailer pages are not tests. The 2026 lineup comes from ebike24, which sells the bikes.
I found no independent test dated 2025 or 2026 for a KTM e-bike. That is the biggest gap in this guide.
KTM e-bike company status: what happened since 2024#
Pierer Mobility, the group that owns the KTM motorcycle business, ran into trouble in 2024. A timeline from the sources I read:
| Date | Event | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1991 to 1992 | KTM split; bicycle division goes to the Urkauf family | Wikipedia, KTM Fahrrad |
| Nov 28, 2024 | Pierer Mobility reported as insolvent; about 11,000 e-bikes given away to staff since summer 2023 to cut stock | ride-MTB |
| Nov 28, 2024 | KTM Fahrrad statement: not affected | Velomotion |
| Feb 2025 | KTM AG creditors accept a restructuring plan with a 30% quota; Bajaj provides funds | Unternehmerblatt |
| Apr 28, 2025 | Pierer's preliminary report: bicycle exit planned; Husqvarna and GASGAS e-bike stock to be liquidated, Felt stake under review, R Raymon sold; bicycle units fell 32% in 2024 | PowersportsBusiness |
| Nov 2025 | Bajaj completes control of KTM for about €800 million (about 75% indirect holding) | Wikipedia |
| Jan 2026 | Pierer Mobility renamed Bajaj Mobility AG | MotorcycleDaily |
Two things matter for a bike buyer. The e-bikes Pierer sold or liquidated were Husqvarna, GASGAS, Felt and R Raymon, not KTM-branded bikes. And KTM Fahrrad had its own cutbacks: Unternehmerblatt reports that production at Mattighofen went to one shift and headcount fell from over 500 to about 400, citing an industry slump that hit many bike companies in 2024 and 2025. That article also says KTM Fahrrad will continue warranty and service, but that is the company's claim.
Wikipedia gives Bajaj's stake as "about 100%" in its infobox and about 75% in the body, so I use the body figure. For what the Bajaj takeover means for motorcycles, see the electric motorcycle section below.
KTM Macina e-bike lineup 2026: what is on sale#
ebike24, a retailer, wrote up the 2026 lineup in July 2025 and updated it in April 2026. It is a shop page, so treat it as a lineup list, not a test.
| Motor | Stated specs | Used on |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Line SX | torque not stated; update planned to 60 Nm | Superbelt SX, Race SX, Gravelator SX, Revelator SX, Urbanator SX, Cross SX, Sport SX, Scarp SX, Mini Me SX |
| Performance Line PX (new) | 90 Nm, 700 W peak | Fold, Tour PX, City PX |
| Performance Line CX | update announced to 100 Nm, 750 W peak | Every, Tour, City, Cross CX, Aera, Style, Gran, Lycan, Chacana, Prowler, Kapoho |
| Performance Line CX-R (new) | Race mode, 400% assistance | Prowler and Kapoho Exonic and Prestige versions |
Battery sizes named are 400 Wh (SX), 500 Wh, 600 Wh, 750 Wh and 800 Wh. Prices listed in euros by ebike24: Revelator SX Prime Di2 7,499 (down 400), Urbanator SX 3,699 (down 200), Aera range 4,399 to 6,799, an entry-level Tour about 3,500, Cross CX 510 LFC under 3,000, and the Kapoho Pro LTD and Comp LTD under 5,000.
New for 2026 per the same page: the Superbelt SX city bike, the Every trekking bike with three variants, and a redesigned Fold. Bosch supplies the motors, batteries and displays.
The company said its new models for the 2025 season, per Unternehmerblatt, were mostly modest updates rather than full redesigns.
If you are comparing with other brands, my best electric bike brands guide has the wider picture.
KTM Macina Kapoho and Prowler: the e-mountain bikes#
These are the performance models, and they have the most independent testing.
| Test | Date | Bike | Claimed specs | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MBR (Sim Mainey) | May 2020 | Macina Kapoho 2972 | Bosch CX Gen 4, 625 Wh, 160/160 mm, 25.7 kg (size S) | £4,499.99 |
| ebike-mtb | Apr 2021 | Macina Kapoho Prestige | Bosch CX 85 Nm, 625 Wh, 24.85 kg (L), 160/160 mm | €7,849 |
| ebike-mtb (Felix Rauch) | Mar 2023 | Macina Prowler Exonic limited edition | Bosch CX-R 85 Nm, 750 Wh, 25.2 kg (L), 180/170 mm | €11,999 |
What the testers found:
- MBR on the 2020 Kapoho. The Bosch motor has more finesse than earlier units. The suspension feels soft at first but grips on climbs, though it reduces agility. The 125 mm dropper felt short, the brakes were adequate, the four-way remote was awkward on rough terrain and the rear 2.8 in tyre skated in mud. Pros: a well-rounded ride, a sleek frame, strong power delivery.
- ebike-mtb on the 2021 Kapoho Prestige. A strong climber with a steep seat tube angle, grippy rear tyre and Bosch motor, but sluggish on fast, rough descents, with a rear end that bottoms out abruptly. The wide rear tyre rubbed the chainstays and the testers had to trim the protector. They called the top-end spec inconsistent (a lower-tier fork damper, a small rear rotor, a short dropper) and said it did not offer good value.
- ebike-mtb on the 2023 Prowler Exonic. Powerful motor with a long overrun, comfortable on flowing trails, but nervous at speed, spongy at the rear from swingarm flex, with tyre rub, a hard-to-remove battery and a rotor that overheated on long descents. Their verdict: a comfortable tourer and a poor fit for demanding enduro trails. The page gave listed specs, not measurements.
The pattern across three tests and three years is consistent: a good Bosch motor and ride, and spec or fit niggles that cost value. Whether the current bikes fixed the tyre clearance and dropper issues, I can't say; I found no newer test.
Check the current price and see the Prowler price at retailers that stock them.
KTM Macina Lycan and Gran: lighter and everyday bikes#
The Lycan is a lighter trail bike, and the only KTM e-bike I found tested by a US outlet.
Electric Bike Review's Court tested a 2017 Macina Lycan Special Edition (page updated December 2024). Specs listed: Bosch Performance Line CX with 75 Nm, a 396 Wh battery, about 47 lb (21.2 to 21.3 kg), RockShox Pike 160 mm fork, Class 1 with 20 mph assist, and a $7,845 price. Warranty listed: two years motor and battery, five years frame.
His findings: light for a full-suspension e-mountain bike thanks to air suspension and a smaller battery; the new eMTB mode gave smoother power than Turbo; the 400 Wh pack suits a light rider on short rides but may fall short for heavier riders or longer climbs; the motor was noisy at high cadence; there are no bottle cage mounts; and the price was hard to justify. It is positive on performance and doubtful on value.
That is a 2017 bike, so the figures are history. Today's Lycan uses the CX motor with 750 to 800 Wh batteries according to ebike24.
For an everyday bike, KTM's own tests page lists the Macina Gran 710 ABS and Macina Cross SX Elite with "sehr gut" scores from German outlets (Radfahren and ElektroRad, as labelled), plus Velomotion pieces on the Sport SX Elite and Mini Me SX 24. That page is curated by KTM, so it only shows the good scores, and it shows no tests dated 2025 or 2026. I treat it as a pointer to what to search, not as evidence.
See the current Gran price at stockists.
Can you buy KTM e-bikes in the US?#
In 2022, Messingschlager USA acquired exclusive US distribution rights to KTM Bike Industries, with North America Cycles (part of Cycle Force Group) as the US distributor. Bicycle Retailer reported on July 25, 2022 that the first bikes would arrive in November 2022 and the full line in spring 2023, through a limited dealer network with exclusive territories. KTM's managing director Stefan Limbrunner called the US "the largest and therefore most important market in the world". The Macina Prowler Exonic was named as the top electric model.
What I could not confirm: how many US dealers there are in 2026, whether the full Macina range is stocked, and the US prices. I found no US test of a current KTM e-bike. Ask a dealer before you commit:
- Which Macina models they can order for the 2026 or 2027 model year.
- Who handles the warranty, because the company is Austrian and the US distributor is separate.
- Which Bosch service point can work on the motor.
Check the speed classes before you buy: Class 1 is 20 mph assist, and Wikipedia's electric bicycle laws summary explains the others. The 2017 Lycan test listed Class 1, but classes can differ by model and market, so confirm it on the exact bike.
KTM electric motorcycles: SX-E and Freeride E#
If your search was for an electric dirt bike, KTM AG's range is a different product from the Macina. Wikipedia lists the SX-E as an electric motocross range rated 1.8, 3.8 and 5.0 kW, and the Freeride E-XC as an 18 kW electric model available in Europe. These are the maker's claims from its spec pages:
| Model | Power | Battery | Seat height | Charging |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 SX-E 5 (kids motocross) | 5 kW max, 2 kW rated | 21 Ah | 682 mm | 70 min to 100% |
| 2025 Freeride E | 19.2 kW max, 11 kW rated, 37.6 Nm | 110 Ah, 50.4 V system | 910 mm | 540 min to 100% |
The Freeride E page gives no kWh figure; 50.4 V times 110 Ah works out to about 5.5 kWh, my own estimate. Neither page gave a weight, a top speed, a range or a price, so I can't compare them with the dirt bikes in my Sur-Ron electric bike models guide. For a first electric motorcycle, the SX-E 5 is a kids' bike by its category and not for adults.
For the e-bike side of Yamaha's story, which also involves a brand retreat, see my Yamaha electric bikes guide.
Is a KTM e-bike worth it in 2027?#
My read, from sources only:
- For: Bosch motors that testers liked in 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2023; light weight on the Lycan; made in Austria by a company that says it is financially sound; a wide 2026 range with city, trekking, gravel and mountain models.
- Against: repeated notes on spec compromises and tyre rub; high prices for the technology in the older tests; no independent test of a 2025 or 2026 model; unclear US dealer coverage; and the company shrank production to one shift at its main site.
- Buy if you can test ride at a local dealer, the exact model is in stock and the dealer will service the Bosch motor.
- For a ktm 2027 electric bike specifically, ask for the 2027 model-year spec sheet, because I found no test of it yet.
- Skip if you need a long, independent track record on the exact bike, in which case other brands in my best electric bikes guide have more test coverage.
A KTM badge on a bike doesn't tell you the support network. Ask where the nearest dealer is.
Frequently asked questions#
Who makes KTM electric bikes?#
KTM-branded pedal e-bikes are made by KTM Fahrrad GmbH in Mattighofen, Austria, which says it has been independent of KTM motorcycles since 1992. The motorcycles come from KTM AG.
Is KTM going out of business?#
KTM AG, the motorcycle maker, went into self-administration in late 2024 and was restructured; Bajaj took control in 2025. KTM Fahrrad GmbH said in November 2024 that it was not affected.
Is KTM Fahrrad insolvent?#
No source I read says so. Unternehmerblatt reported in October 2025 that it has not filed for insolvency, though that article is AI-assisted and relies on company statements.
Which motor do KTM e-bikes use?#
Bosch. ebike24's 2026 list shows Performance Line SX, PX, CX and CX-R motors, depending on the model.
What is the best KTM e-bike?#
No independent test ranks them. For mountain riding the Kapoho and Prowler have the most testing, with mixed value verdicts. Check the exact model for 2026.
How much do KTM e-bikes cost?#
ebike24 listed 2026 prices from under €3,000 (Cross CX 510 LFC) to €7,499 (Revelator SX Prime Di2) and €4,399 to €6,799 for the Aera range. Prices vary by country and seller.
Can I buy a KTM e-bike in the US?#
Messingschlager USA and North America Cycles got US distribution rights in 2022. I couldn't confirm the 2026 dealer network, so ask a local dealer.
What warranty does a KTM electric bike 2027 model have?#
The only warranty I found is from a 2017 review (two years motor and battery, five years frame). Ask the dealer for the current terms.
Does KTM make an electric dirt bike?#
Yes, KTM AG lists the SX-E range for kids and the Freeride E. These are separate from the Macina e-bikes.
Are KTM e-bikes the same company as KTM motorcycles?#
No. They are separate companies that share the name. The bicycle company says it has no relationship with the motorcycle group.
Is the KTM Macina Class 1?#
The 2017 Lycan test lists Class 1 (20 mph assist). Other models can differ by market, so confirm the class for the exact bike.
The bottom line#
For a ktm electric bike 2027 purchase, the short version is this: KTM e-bikes are made by a separate Austrian company that says the motorcycle crisis did not touch it, they use Bosch motors that testers like, and the independent tests that exist flag fit and value issues. I would buy only after a test ride at a dealer who can service the Bosch drive, and I would not pay full price without checking the exact 2026 or 2027 spec.
Prices, models and company status change, so check the current details with the dealer before you buy. Since I haven't ridden these bikes, treat my notes as a sourced summary of other people's tests and read a hands-on review of the exact model.
