How fast do electric skateboards go? Most commercial boards top out between about 18 and 28 mph (29 to 45 km/h). A few high-performance models are advertised above 40 mph, and custom-built boards have gone much faster. The Guinness record stands at 132.37 km/h (82.25 mph), set on a prototype, not something you can buy. The boards most people ride sit nearer the 20 to 25 mph middle of that range, which is where Wikipedia puts typical retail boards too.

How fast does an electric skateboard go in real riding, though? Usually a little less than the box says. This guide separates what makers claim from what testers measured, explains what sets a board's top speed, and covers the legal caps that matter more than the spec sheet for many riders.

I haven't ridden or tested any of these boards. The speeds come from the testers and brands named in the text, and the record from Guinness World Records. Where I'm giving my own opinion, I say so.

Typical electric skateboard speeds: claimed versus tested#

Sources give slightly different ranges, which is normal because nobody measures the same thing:

SourceSpeed range stated
Maxfind (a board maker)18 to 28 mph, with some high-performance models above 40 mph
Ride ReviewUp to 20 to 25 mph
WikipediaAbout 20 to 25 mph for typical retail boards in their fastest modes; specialist and hobbyist boards 50 mph and beyond

Now the named boards, with claims and tests kept apart:

BoardMaker's claimWhat a tester reported
Backfire G2 (dual 400 W hub motors)24 mph22.4 mph in ERideHero's test
Meepo V528 mph (45 km/h)29 mph in gear 4, but with the board on a chair and no rider (CNX Software). No road top speed was reported
Gnarboards Trail Rider28 mph (NBC News report)Not tested in the article

Two things I take from this. First, the Backfire G2 test came in about 1.6 mph under the claim, which is the usual direction. Second, the Meepo number is a no-load bench figure, so it shows what the motor controller allows, not what a rider will see. The CNX author added about 14 kg to the board for the road test because gears 3 and 4 caused wheelspin without a load. Never treat a bench number as a road number.

Acceleration is a different story. NBC News reported the four-wheel-drive Gnarboards Trail Rider reaching 28 mph in 1.9 seconds, which the maker compared with road cars. That is a maker claim in a news report, and it is the kind of figure that matters if you are asking how hard a board pulls, not how fast it finally goes.

What decides how fast an electric skateboard goes#

How fast does an electric skateboard go on any given day? These are the factors the sources agree on:

  • Motor power and setup. Maxfind says higher-wattage motors, such as 1,500 W or more, tend to reach higher speeds and handle hills better. The Wikipedia article on electric skateboards lists the main drivetrains (hub, belt, direct and gear drive) and notes dual motor is the most popular setup, with single motor typical of entry-level boards and four motors also available. Wikipedia adds that belt drive gives better acceleration and braking for the same power but is louder, while hub drive is compact and quiet but has less torque.
  • Battery charge. Maxfind says speed drops as charge falls, so you need a full battery to reach top speed. Cold weather and steep hills on a low battery add strain.
  • Rider weight. Heavier riders may see slightly lower speeds (Maxfind).
  • Terrain. Flat ground allows maximum speed. Hills and rough surfaces reduce it.
  • Wheel size. Maxfind recommends larger, all-terrain wheels for faster riding.
  • Deck length. Wikipedia says high speed almost always calls for a longboard, because longer decks and wider, longer wheelbases are more stable.
  • Speed modes. Many boards let you cap top speed. The Backfire G2 test lists regular, fast and eco riding modes, and the Meepo V5 has four gears. In my view, a board whose top speed you can limit is a better first board than one that only has full power.

My own rule of thumb, not a tested one: if a board's claimed top speed is 25 mph, plan around low 20s with a full battery on flat ground and a lighter rider, and lower than that on a hilly commute. Treat the claim as a ceiling.

How fast is the fastest electric skateboard ever?#

The record is held by Raine Kent of Australia, who reached 132.37 km/h (82.25 mph) at Bullsbrook, Western Australia, on 17 September 2022, according to Guinness World Records. The attempt was made on a prototype or modified board, not a commercially produced one. The University of Western Australia says the board was custom designed, and that Kent beat the previous record of 95 km/h.

That earlier figure, 95.83 km/h, was set by Mischo Erban in 2016 per Guinness's own news item. Neither run tells you anything about the boards on sale. I mention them because "how fast do electric skateboards go" has two honest answers: about 18 to 28 mph for a normal board, and a much higher figure for one-off machines built for a record.

Speed limits and laws for electric skateboards#

For many riders the legal limit is lower than the board's top speed. Rules vary by country and by state, and Wikipedia notes they are still debated. The example I can quote is California's AB 604, as summarised in the bill analysis on the California legislature site:

  • The electric propulsion system must be under 1,000 watts.
  • The definition sets a top speed of 20 mph on a level paved surface, and a 15 mph limit applies to these skateboards.
  • The board can be no longer than five feet and no wider than 18 inches, with four wheels and room for one rider.
  • The rider must be at least 16 and wear a helmet.
  • Use is limited to streets with speed limits of 35 mph or less, unless the board is in a bike lane.

That analysis is from 2015, and Wikipedia says California updated its law in 2017, so check the current California Vehicle Code before relying on it. A board that can do 28 mph can sit well above a rule like this, which is another reason a speed-limit mode is useful. Wherever you live, check your local rules before you ride.

Is it safe to ride an electric skateboard at top speed?#

Speed is where the risk is. Wikipedia cites several fatal accidents and many hospital visits, and says injury data from 2018 to 2022 found more hospitalizations and multiple fractures per accident for electric skateboards than for traditional ones. It recommends motorcycle armor, including helmet, knee, elbow and wrist pads, for high-speed riding.

Two details on how these boards stop. Wikipedia says braking is typically dynamic or regenerative and acts on the rear wheels only, and stopping distance varies widely between motors and tires. That is why a board that accelerates quickly may not stop as quickly as you expect. Maxfind's advice is to practise in open areas before riding around crowds or traffic and to raise your speed gradually.

My opinion: pick a top speed you can stop from comfortably on the surface you ride, not the fastest board in your budget. Most commutes and campus rides do not need the top of the range.

How electric skateboard speed compares with other rides#

If you are choosing between categories, speed is only one input. For the numbers on other rides, see how fast electric scooters go, how fast e-bikes go and how fast a Onewheel goes and what it costs. If you are new to the term, what an e-board is explains the basics.

Frequently asked questions#

How fast do electric skateboards go on average?#

Most reach about 18 to 28 mph, with 20 to 25 mph the typical range quoted by Ride Review and Wikipedia.

How fast does an electric skateboard go for a beginner?#

A beginner should use a lower speed mode, which many boards offer. Maxfind advises starting slowly and raising speed as your skill improves.

How fast do electric skateboards go in mph versus km/h?#

18 to 28 mph is roughly 29 to 45 km/h. The Guinness record of 132.37 km/h is 82.25 mph.

How fast does an electric skateboard go uphill?#

Slower. Maxfind says hills and rough ground reduce speed, and low battery plus a steep incline adds strain.

How fast does an electric skateboard go in cold weather?#

Maxfind lists cold weather as one of the things that adds strain when the battery is low, so expect less than the claim. I haven't found a tested figure for a specific cold-weather loss.

How fast do electric skateboards go compared with their claimed speed?#

Often a little lower. ERideHero measured 22.4 mph on the Backfire G2 against a 24 mph claim.

How fast does the fastest electric skateboard go?#

132.37 km/h (82.25 mph) per Guinness, on a prototype, not a retail board.

Is there a speed limit for electric skateboards?#

It depends on where you live. California's AB 604 definition, for example, uses 20 mph and 1,000 watts, with a 15 mph limit. Check your local rules.

Can I limit the top speed of my electric skateboard?#

Many boards allow it. Maxfind says some offer customizable speed modes, and the Meepo V5 has four gears.

Do heavier riders go slower?#

Slightly, according to Maxfind.

The bottom line#

So, how fast do electric skateboards go? About 18 to 28 mph for boards you can buy, a little under the claim in the tests I found, and far higher only on one-off record builds. Battery charge, rider weight, hills and the board's own speed mode all move the number day to day.

If you are buying, choose for the speed you can control and the rules where you ride, not the biggest figure on the box. Start with my best electric skateboards guide to compare models.
