How far can an electric scooter go on one charge? For most commuter models, about 15 to 25 real miles (24 to 40 km), usually well under the claimed figure. RiderGuide tested 12 scooters and found they delivered about 71 percent of their claimed range on average. How fast can you go on a scooter or an electric scooter? Most consumer models reach about 15 to 25 mph (24 to 40 km/h), though many places cap riders at 15 to 20 mph by law.
This guide answers the whole family of "how far, how fast, how long" questions in one place: how many miles or km an electric scooter can go on a charge, how many miles an electric scooter lasts before it is worn out, how fast the average and the fastest scooters go, how fast electric scooters or e scooters are allowed to go, and how long it takes to scooter a mile compared with walking.
I haven't ridden or tested any of these scooters. Tested figures come from RiderGuide and ERideHero, claims from the makers and blogs named in the text, and anything I calculated is labelled as my arithmetic. Where sources disagree I show both.

How far can an electric scooter go on one charge? Claimed versus tested#
Makers publish a claimed range. Testers ride until the scooter shuts down. RiderGuide's claimed-versus-tested comparison (updated July 14, 2026) shows the gap. Its test is a standardized real-world loop with stops and hills at normal cruising speed. The claims it describes assume a light rider of about 130 lb on flat ground in perfect weather at the slowest mode.
| Scooter | Claimed (mi) | Tested (mi) | Share delivered |
|---|---|---|---|
| VMAX VX5 Pro GT | 22 | 19.7 | 90% |
| Teewing GT4 | 43.5 | 34.5 | 79% |
| Hover-1 Ace R450 | 25.6 | 20.2 | 79% |
| Hover-1 Journey Max | 26 | 20.4 | 78% |
| EMOVE Touring | 24 | 18.7 | 78% |
| Hiboy S2 | 17 | 12.7 | 75% |
| Segway Ninebot E2 Pro | 21.7 | 16.0 | 74% |
| EMOVE Cruiser S | 62 | 43.6 | 70% |
| NIU KQi2 Pro | 24.9 | 15.7 | 63% |
| Unagi Model One (E500) | 15.5 | 8.5 | 55% |
| GOTRAX G3 Plus | 18 | 9.8 | 54% |
| Segway Ninebot Max (G30P) | 40.4 | 21.6 | 53% |
The average works out to about 71 percent, with shortfalls from about 10 to 47 percent. RiderGuide's planning rule is to multiply the claim by 0.7, and it says riders over 220 lb should plan on roughly half the claim. Apollo, a maker, says real-world range is 30 to 50 percent below claims and recommends a 30 percent buffer. Those are different sources with different methods, and I'm not blending them: RiderGuide is a tester, Apollo is a brand with its own estimates.
Notice that the two biggest claims, 62 and 40.4 miles, delivered 70 percent or less. The more optimistic the number on the box, the more I'd discount it.
How many miles or km can an electric scooter go?#
So how many miles can an electric scooter go in practice, and how many km can an electric scooter go? Battery size is the best predictor. If you want a number for how far can an electric scooter go on one charge, start with the battery watt-hours. Apollo's own figures give about 12 to 15 miles for a 500 Wh battery and 25 to 30 miles for a 1,000 Wh battery. In kilometres that is roughly 19 to 24 km and 40 to 48 km (my conversion). Apollo suggests 500 to 700 Wh for commutes under 5 miles each way, 800 to 1,000 Wh for moderate speed or distance, and 1,200 Wh or more for long rides or steep terrain.
You can estimate your own scooter with one sum: range ≈ battery watt-hours ÷ watt-hours used per mile. RiderGuide puts consumption at about 25 to 35 Wh per mile at commuting speeds, so a 551 Wh battery gives about 16 to 22 real miles. ERideHero tested 78 scooters with a 175 lb rider at moderate speed on mixed terrain until empty and averaged 26.3 Wh per mile.
A worked example: the Segway Ninebot Max G2 has a 551 Wh battery (36 V, 15.3 Ah) per ERideHero. At the 26.3 Wh per mile average that is about 21 miles by my arithmetic. ERideHero measured 29.8 miles at regular speed, 21.3 miles in a speed-priority mode and 33.4 miles in a range-priority mode, against a claimed "theoretical top range" of 43 miles. The three tests were run with speed limited to 22, 19 and 15 mph, which I read as matching speed-priority, regular and range-priority respectively, but that mapping is my reading of the page. RiderGuide's own Max G2 review measured 26.6 miles on its own loop. Two testers, two loops, two numbers: I'm showing both.
Wikipedia, citing the Electric Scooter Database, says ranges across all scooter models run from 9 to 200 km (6 to 124 miles) per the Electric kick scooter article. That is the full spread of the market, not what a typical commuter model will do.
What makes an electric scooter go less far#
Apollo calls speed the number one range killer and gives these figures from its own estimates:
| Factor | Apollo's figure |
|---|---|
| Speed | About 14 Wh per mile at 25 km/h versus 20 to 22 Wh per mile at 35 km/h, around 50 percent more |
| Rider weight | 10 to 25 percent less range above the 150 to 165 lb test weight |
| Hills | A half-mile hill at a 5 percent grade uses about 10 percent of the battery |
| Stop-and-go | 15 to 25 percent less range than steady riding at the same average speed |
| Cold | At 5°C (41°F) range drops 15 to 25 percent |
RiderGuide lists the same factors (weight, speed, stops, hills, wind and cold) and says together they usually cut range by 25 to 45 percent. ERideHero's tests show the speed effect directly: the Max G2 managed 33.4 miles when limited to 15 mph and 21.3 miles in the speed-priority test. If you want range, ride in the eco or range mode. For more on how long the battery lasts per charge, see how long an electric scooter battery lasts, and for charging see how long an electric scooter takes to charge and what it costs to charge.
How far can you go on an electric scooter in a day?#
How far can you go on an electric scooter in one day? One charge, plus however long you can wait to recharge. On a typical commuter model that is about 15 to 25 real miles, so a 5-mile commute each way fits in one charge with room to spare. How far can you travel on an electric scooter if you ride all day? You need a charge stop or a spare pack, because the claimed figure is not what you will get.
If you mean a kick scooter with no motor, how far can you go on a scooter or how far can you travel on a scooter without a battery depends on you, and I have no sourced figure for it.
Two rules of thumb, both mine: plan to use no more than about 70 percent of the claimed range (RiderGuide's multiplier), and don't plan to arrive on empty, since the last stretch of a pack often feels weaker. Check the rider weight limit on your model too. My best lightweight and foldable electric scooters guide covers smaller models, which usually trade range for portability.
How many miles does an electric scooter last?#
This is a different question from range. How many miles does an electric scooter last before it needs replacing, and how many miles can an electric scooter last or how many miles will an electric scooter last on the same battery? Sources give estimates, not test results:
| Source | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Levy | 3,000 to 10,000 miles and 3 to 10 years typical; a good scooter at least 10,000 miles; many models beyond 20,000 to 30,000. Battery 500 to 1,000 full cycles (its summary says 300 to 500 cycles); brushless motors 10,000 to 30,000 miles |
| Gyroor | Battery by tier: entry-level 3,000 to 6,000 miles, mid-range 6,000 to 10,000, premium 10,000 to 15,000 or more. Durable scooters can give 10,000 miles or more |
Levy's page contradicts itself between its summary and its body, as I noted, so treat its figures loosely. Gyroor's end-of-life signs are range below 50 percent of the original on a full charge, and a major component or frame failure.
Here is my arithmetic. Gyroor says a UL-certified pack is designed for 500 or more full cycles. At about 20 real miles a cycle that is about 10,000 miles, and Gyroor's own sum at 25 miles a cycle gives 12,500. Real packs lose capacity as they age, so later cycles cover fewer miles than early ones. That is why I'd treat 10,000 miles as a good outcome rather than a promise.
And how many miles is a lot for a scooter? Going by those sources, I'd call anything past about 3,000 to 6,000 miles a lot on an entry-level scooter and past 10,000 miles a lot for any scooter. That is my reading, not a standard. If you want to know how many miles can you put on a scooter in years, the battery guide is the better place: how long an electric scooter battery lasts. In kilometres, 10,000 miles is about 16,000 km (my conversion), so how many km can an electric scooter last? Roughly 5,000 to 24,000 km on the sources above.
How fast does an electric scooter go in km and mph?#
How fast can you go on a scooter, or how fast can you go on an electric scooter? Levy says consumer-grade scooters go about 15 to 25 mph, higher-end models 30 to 50 mph and high-performance models 50 mph or more. In km/h, 15 to 25 mph is about 24 to 40 km/h (my conversion). So how fast does an electric scooter go in km? Typically 24 to 40 km/h for a consumer model. And how fast does the average electric scooter go? That depends on what you count as average. Wikipedia, citing the Electric Scooter Database, gives a market-wide range of 14 to 160 km/h (9 to 99 mph), which is wide enough to be useless as an average. Levy's 15 to 25 mph band is the usable one for the scooters most people buy.
A tested example: ERideHero measured the Segway Ninebot Max G2 at 22.4 mph (36 km/h) against a 22 mph spec. RiderGuide measured 21.7 mph for the same scooter. Two testers, a 0.7 mph spread. ERideHero's 175 lb rider reached 15 mph in 4.65 seconds on average and 20 mph in 8.51 seconds.
Watts and speed. Levy says a 250 W motor gets about 15 mph and a 500 W motor above 20 mph. A second Levy page says a 500 W scooter typically reaches about 20 to 28 mph (32 to 45 km/h) and is describing usual, not guaranteed, figures. These are from the same brand and overlap but are not identical, so how fast does a 500w electric scooter go? About 20 mph or a little more is the safe reading. How fast does a 1600w electric scooter go? I found no sourced figure for 1,600 W specifically. For scale, Scooter Guide lists the dual-motor Dualtron X2 at 8,300 W total and up to 68 mph, which shows power helps but the relationship depends on the whole design. How fast does a 12v electric scooter go? I couldn't find a sourced speed figure for 12 V scooters either, and I'd treat them as a different class from the commuter models above.
If you want speed as the main buying criterion, see my best fast and high-performance electric scooters guide.
For comparison, how fast e-bikes go and how fast electric skateboards go cover the other rides. If you own a Razor, my Razor electric scooter questions post has its speed and range figures.
How fast does the fastest electric scooter go?#
How fast does the fastest electric scooter go depends on what you count, and how fast can the fastest electric scooter go depends on whether you mean a model you can buy. There are three honest answers.
Production scooters, claimed. Electrify News's June 2023 list gives the WEPED Sonic Dual at 99.42 mph as an absolute maximum (with a safe limit of 87 mph), the Rion Thrust at 80 mph, the Dualtron X2 at about 68 to 69 mph, the Kaabo Wolf King GT at about 62 mph and the NAMI Burn-E 2 Max at 60 mph. Every figure there is claimed or reported, not independently measured, and it is dated 2023, so models may have been overtaken since.
One-off record machines. ScooterLab reported that Velocifero's boss Alessandro Tartarini reached 198 km/h (123 mph) on a specially built electric kick scooter on the Monza straight, with 0 to 100 km/h in 3.27 seconds. The article names no governing body or record category. Scooter Guide's world-records page says Guinness had not recognised the Dualtron X2 or Rion2 RE90 claims; it lists the Rion2 RE90 at 80 mph limited, with a 100 mph figure it calls largely unproven.
The market range. Wikipedia's 99 mph (160 km/h) upper bound for scooter models matches the top claim in the Electrify News list.
So how fast is the fastest electric scooter in the world? On paper, somewhere around 99 mph for a scooter you can buy and 123 mph for a one-off, none of it independently verified by a source I could check. How fast can the fastest electric scooter go safely is a different question, and the same Electrify News list shows a maker listing a lower safe limit than its absolute maximum. How fast does the fastest e scooter go on public roads? Far less, because of the legal limits in the next section. See fastest e-bikes in the world for the e-bike equivalent.
How fast are electric scooters allowed to go?#
How fast are electric scooters allowed to go depends entirely on where you ride, and how fast are e scooters allowed to go in your city may differ from your state. These are the figures I found; they conflict in places, and rules change, so check your own state or city.
| Place | Limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| California | 15 mph; riders 16 or older, helmet | Levy, Maxfind (they agree) |
| New York (state) | 20 mph | Maxfind |
| New York City | 15 mph per Maxfind, 20 mph per Levy | The two sources conflict |
| Most other US states | 20 mph | Maxfind |
| Texas | 35 mph road cap | Maxfind |
| Oklahoma | 25 mph | Maxfind |
| Colorado | 30 mph on roads, 6 mph on sidewalks | Maxfind |
| Florida | 15 mph on sidewalks | Maxfind |
| Germany | 20 km/h (12 mph) | Levy |
| France | 25 km/h (15 mph) | Levy |
| UK rental trial scooters | 15.5 mph | GOV.UK |
On the US federal level the two sources differ. Levy says the federal figure is 20 mph and that federal law treats e-scooters as electric bicycles. Maxfind says its page doesn't mention a federal speed limit and that manufacturing standards are national while operating rules are left to the states. I'm not resolving that; check the current rules. Maxfind also says many states apply a 750 W motor limit, and that 20 mph is the usual ceiling unless posted lower.
On how fast can an electric scooter go legally in the UK: GOV.UK's e-scooter trial guidance says the maximum speed for a rental e-scooter is 15.5 mph, and that using a privately owned e-scooter on public land is against the law, with penalties including a fine, penalty points and impoundment. For more detail see are electric scooters legal in the UK, electric scooter laws and age limits, and the e-bike side in electric bike laws by state.
Remember that a scooter's top speed and the legal limit are separate numbers. A scooter that can do 25 mph can still be ridden at 15 mph where that is the cap, and a speed-limit mode (a feature many models have) makes that easier. For how to ride safely at any speed, see how to ride an electric scooter.
How fast is a scooter compared to walking? How long to scooter a mile?#
The Wikipedia article on preferred walking speed gives a typical adult range of 4.0 to 5.9 km/h (2.5 to 3.7 mph) and a commonly cited average of 5.0 km/h (3.1 mph). Here are the times per mile from simple division (60 ÷ mph), all my arithmetic:
| Speed | Minutes per mile | 12 miles |
|---|---|---|
| Walking, 3.1 mph | about 19.4 | about 3 h 52 min |
| Scooter at 10 mph | 6.0 | 72 min |
| Scooter at 15 mph | 4.0 | 48 min |
| Scooter at 15.5 mph (UK rental limit) | about 3.9 | about 46.5 min |
| Scooter at 20 mph | 3.0 | 36 min |
| Max G2 top speed, 22.4 mph (ERideHero) | about 2.7 | about 32 min |
So how long does it take to scooter a mile? About 4 minutes at 15 mph, and about 3 minutes at 20 mph, if you ride at a steady speed. How long does it take to scooter 1 mile in a real city? Longer, because of crossings, traffic and slow zones, and I have no sourced average trip speed. And how much faster is a scooter than walking? At 15 mph versus a 3.1 mph walk it is about 4.8 times as fast by my sum.
How long is 12 miles on an electric scooter? About 48 minutes at 15 mph, or 36 minutes at 20 mph. Energy-wise, 12 miles at RiderGuide's 25 to 35 Wh per mile is about 300 to 420 Wh, which a 551 Wh battery can cover. For commuter-friendly models, see best electric scooters for commuting and best electric scooters.

He writes practical guides on electric bikes, electric scooters and electric skateboards, covering how fast they go, how they charge and what the rules say. He builds each guide from manuals, regulations and published research, and he says plainly when something is his own opinion.
