How much does an ebike weigh? The two sellers I read say about 35 to 70 lb (Letrigo) or 15 to 30 kg, which is roughly 33 to 66 lb (Fiido). Gazelle says 44 to 58 lb before the battery. The lightest bikes I found measured on a scale are around 28 to 40 lb, and the lightest claimed weights go below 25 lb. That spread is the real answer: how much do e-bikes weigh depends on the type, the battery and who is doing the weighing.

I haven't weighed any of these bikes. The ranges come from makers and sellers (Letrigo, Fiido, Gazelle), whose figures are unsourced or for their own models, and the measured weights come from testers (Mountain Bike Rider, Rider Guide, Electric Bike Review and one 2020 review). Where a number is a maker's claim, I say so. All kilogram-to-pound conversions are my own arithmetic.

How much does an e-bike weigh?#

How much does an electric bike weigh according to the three makers and sellers that give ranges:

SourceTypical weightNotes
Letrigo (maker)35 to 70 lb overallNo source or method given
Fiido (maker)15 to 30 kg overall (about 33 to 66 lb)Its own type ranges reach 65 kg for cargo, so the overall range conflicts with the rest of its article
Gazelle (maker)44 to 58 lb (20 to 26 kg) without the batteryReflects Gazelle's own models. The page also says the battery adds weight and the total is roughly 13 to 18 lb more than a regular bike, which reads ambiguously, so I haven't used it

None of these is a test. Letrigo and Fiido don't say whether their numbers are measured or claimed, and Gazelle's reflect its own bikes. So how heavy is an electric bike? A normal commuter e-bike with its battery is probably in the 40 to 60 lb range, based on the figures I can cross-check below, and that is my reading, not a sourced number.

Battery and motor. Gazelle says batteries weigh about 6 to 10 lb (2.5 to 4 kg), and that removing the battery for transport saves roughly 6 to 7 lb. Fiido says batteries weigh 5 to 10 kg (about 11 to 22 lb) and motors about 5 kg (about 11 lb), unsourced. Those battery figures conflict by roughly a factor of two. Letrigo says the motor is one of the heaviest components and mid-drives add weight to the frame, with no numbers.

How heavy is an electric bike by type?#

How heavy is an electric bike for each type, from the two sellers that split it out:

TypeLetrigoFiido
City or commuter35 to 50 lb22 to 31 kg (about 49 to 68 lb)
Folding30 to 40 lbmini folding 13 to 18 kg (about 29 to 40 lb); folding mountain 18 to 31 kg (about 40 to 68 lb)
Mountain50 to 70 lb18 to 32 kg (about 40 to 71 lb); fat-tire 27 to 36 kg (about 60 to 79 lb)
Roadnot givenas little as 18 kg (about 40 lb)
Cargo60+ lb35 to 65 kg (about 77 to 143 lb)

Look at the commuter row: Letrigo says 35 to 50 lb and Fiido says about 49 to 68 lb. They overlap only a little, and neither gives a source. Electric Bike Review's senior-friendly list, which included step-through commuters and trikes, ran from about 45 lb to about 78 lb for two-wheel bikes and about 79 to 86 lb for trikes, as listed. My reading, as opinion: that suggests step-through commuter e-bikes are often heavier than Letrigo's range. Treat the table as ballpark.

What is the lightest e-bike?#

What is the lightest e-bike depends on whether you mean a claim, a production bike you can buy, or a measured weight. The numbers I found, with who produced them:

Claimed by makers (via Electric Bike Report, by Richard Peace, published July 2020 and modified September 2024; the site earns affiliate commissions):

  • Wilier Cento10 Hybrid, an e-road bike: 23 lb, called the lightest production e-road bike.
  • COBOC ONE eCycle F1: claimed 24 lb.
  • Hummingbird Electric folder: a "corroborated" 24 lb, with a single gear and a 158 Wh battery.
  • Ribble e-road: lightest build around 24 lb.
  • Specialized Turbo Vado SL 4.0 EQ: under 37 lb fully equipped, and the lightest pared-back Vado SL claims 33 lb.
  • Brompton Electric: nearly 40 lb. GoCycle GX: 41 lb.

Weighed by testers:

  • Mountain Bike Rider weighed eight SL electric mountain bikes on scales (November 4, 2024), with the same tires and sealant fitted. The lightest was the Specialized Turbo Levo SL Expert Carbon at 18.48 kg (about 40.7 lb) in a size S4, and the heaviest the Orange Phase EVO at 20.88 kg (about 46.0 lb). The spread was about 2.4 kg. These are measured weights of mountain bikes in different sizes, so they say little about road or commuter bikes.
  • Rider Guide lists the Ride1Up CF Racer1 at 28.6 lb, the Aventon Soltera 3 ADV at 37 lb, the Velotric Tempo at 39 lb (34 lb without battery) and the Lectric XP Lite 2 at 49 lb (41 lb without battery). It says its protocol measures verified weight, but I couldn't read its method page, and the page's dates conflict, so I don't know how it weighed them.
  • Review of the Vado SL (The Next Web, December 2020): the reviewer listed 33 lb claimed and 35 lb as tested, a 240 W, 35 Nm motor and a 320 Wh battery. That is a 2020 review, so the specs may have changed.

So what is the lightest e-bike? On claims, about 23 to 24 lb for specialist road and folding bikes. On the best measured number I could find for something you could commute on, about 28.6 lb (the Rider Guide figure for the CF Racer1). I can't say there is nothing lighter.

What is the lightest weight electric bike, and what do you give up?#

If you are asking what is the lightest weight electric bike you could actually live with, the sources are consistent about the trade-offs:

  • Smaller batteries and range. Electric Bike Report says most very light models have smaller batteries, and gives the Hummingbird's 158 Wh as an example. Rider Guide says lighter bikes use smaller batteries and suggests planning for 60 to 70 percent of the listed range.
  • Price. Electric Bike Report says very light e-bikes "tend to be extremely pricey." The 2020 Vado SL review said other bikes offered two or three times the specs for less money.
  • Motor power. The Vado SL review notes modest power for the price and no throttle. Electric Bike Report says many modern motors can power almost any bike weight up to the legal assist limit.
  • Battery removal. Electric Bike Report says some very light models drop battery cases and locks, so the battery can't be removed, and the 2020 Vado SL review says its battery can't be removed without removing the motor.
  • Off-road. Electric Bike Report says electric mountain bikes are hard to make light because of suspension, tires and frame strength.

Letrigo adds the other side: heavier bikes can feel more stable at speed and on rough ground. And what is the lightest weight electric bike for a rider who wants range? There is no source that gives a tested trade-off curve, so I'd read the lightest weight electric bike as a compromise you choose, not a free upgrade. For range numbers, see my longest range electric bikes guide.

Does the weight matter?#

What the sources say about why weight matters:

  • Carrying. Electric Bike Report uses "as near 33 lb / 15 kg as possible" as its benchmark for carrying a bike up stairs, saying practical equipment may push it to about 40 lb / 18 kg. Letrigo says lighter bikes are easier to transport and store, and heavier ones harder to lift in urban settings.
  • Racks and cars. Gazelle says average bike rack capacity is about 66 lb (30 kg). That is one maker's figure, so check your own rack's rated limit and the bike's weight with the battery on and off.
  • Ride feel. Letrigo says extra weight can make a bike feel slower on flat ground, reduce range and make steering less nimble in tight spaces. Fiido says the weight is barely noticed on straight rides but takes getting used to in tight spaces. Neither tested this.
  • After a fall. The authors of a 2026 Munich hospital study of e-bike crashes (see my seniors guide) cite a bike weight of about 20 kg as one reason the bikes are harder to control after a loss of balance. That is a suggestion by the authors, not a measured finding.

If weight matters to you, folding bikes are where it matters most, per Electric Bike Report. See my folding electric bikes guide, and, for rider weight limits on scooters rather than bikes, my e-scooter age and weight guide.

How to check a bike's real weight#

Opinion, based on the mismatches above:

  1. Check what the number includes. Rider Guide gives weights with and without the battery for the same bike (39 lb with and 34 lb without for the Velotric Tempo). Pedals and size matter too: Mountain Bike Rider notes one bike was weighed without pedals and in a different size.
  2. Prefer measured over claimed. Electric Bike Review measured two bikes in its senior guide: the HeyBike Venus was listed at 45 lb without the battery and tested at 46.5 lb, and 50 lb with it versus 53.9 lb tested; the Aventon Aventure M was listed at 73 lb and tested at 74.6 lb. My arithmetic: tested was about 1.5 lb, 3.9 lb and 1.6 lb heavier. Its Velotric Breeze 1 entry is inconsistent, with 48 lb in the table and 42 lb without the battery in the text.
  3. Weigh it yourself if you will lift it, on a bathroom scale while holding it and subtracting your own weight.

Frequently asked questions#

How much does an ebike weigh?#

Letrigo says 35 to 70 lb, Fiido says 15 to 30 kg (about 33 to 66 lb) and Gazelle says 44 to 58 lb before the battery. None is a test.

How much do e-bikes weigh with the battery?#

Gazelle says batteries weigh about 6 to 10 lb and removing one saves roughly 6 to 7 lb. Fiido gives 5 to 10 kg, so the sources conflict.

How heavy is an electric bike compared with a normal bike?#

No tested comparison in the sources. Gazelle's page says roughly 13 to 18 lb more than a regular bike, but reads ambiguously.

How much does an electric bike weigh for a folding model?#

Letrigo says 30 to 40 lb. Fiido says about 29 to 40 lb for mini folders and 40 to 68 lb for folding mountain bikes.

How much does an electric bike weigh for cargo?#

Letrigo says 60+ lb. Fiido says 35 to 65 kg (about 77 to 143 lb). Both unsourced.

What is the lightest e-bike?#

Claimed: about 23 to 24 lb for specialist road and folding bikes. Best measured commuter-style weight I found: 28.6 lb (Rider Guide, Ride1Up CF Racer1).

What is the lightest weight electric bike you can buy?#

I couldn't verify one beyond those. Check the maker's page and ask whether the weight includes the battery.

Are lighter e-bikes worse?#

Sources say they tend to have smaller batteries, cost more and sometimes have non-removable batteries.

Is a heavy e-bike safer?#

Letrigo says heavier bikes can feel more stable at speed. No source tested safety by weight.

How do I find a bike's real weight?#

Look for tester-measured weights and check whether the figure includes the battery, pedals and a given size.

Do e-bikes fit on a standard rack?#

Gazelle says average rack capacity is about 66 lb. Check your rack's rating.

The bottom line#

How much does an ebike weigh? Roughly 35 to 70 lb according to the sellers, with the lightest measured commuter-style bike I found at 28.6 lb and the lightest claims under 25 lb. The lighter you go, the more you tend to pay and the smaller the battery. Check whether a listed weight includes the battery, and see my folding e-bike guide if you need to carry it.
