How to put a back wheel on a scooter is the removal steps in reverse, but the removal steps depend on what is in the wheel. If the rear wheel has a hub motor, you have a motor cable to unplug and probably a brake to deal with before the axle comes loose. If it is a plain wheel on an axle, it can be as simple as a nut and a couple of washers.
I haven't taken a wheel off any of these scooters. The steps come from Levy (a scooter rental and sales company), Gyroor (a maker), and a student-written iFixit wiki page, and they are not equal: Levy's rear-wheel guide is detailed, its front-wheel guide is a general overview, and Gyroor's guide gives no torque values. Your manual wins. This job involves brakes and, on many scooters, motor wiring, so if you are unsure, a shop is the safer choice; see my repair cost and shops guide.

Before you start#
Both Levy and Gyroor start the same way. Power the scooter off, and take the battery out if it is removable (Levy) or disconnect it if possible (Gyroor). I wouldn't open a battery housing or touch the pack; only do this if your manual shows a simple removable battery. Support the scooter so it can't tip. Levy suggests raising the rear wheel on a stand or blocks.
Tools. Levy's rear-wheel list: a metric Allen set, wrenches or sockets (about 10 to 17 mm), gloves, rags, a hardware tray, penetrating oil and a light, with a torque wrench optional but useful. Gyroor's list is hex keys, a wrench set, flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, pliers and an optional rubber mallet. Levy adds tire levers only if you are changing the tire.
Photograph first. Levy says to photograph the cable routing and the order of spacers and shims. I'd do that every time.
How to remove the rear wheel on an electric scooter#
How to remove the rear wheel on an electric scooter with a hub motor, from Levy's detailed guide, with Gyroor's differences noted:
- Unplug the motor cable. Levy says to release the connector's tab or unscrew its locking ring, then pull the connector bodies apart, never the wires. Gyroor says the same: find the connector near the hub and unplug it. Levy says to secure the frame-side end with a tie or tape.
- Deal with the brake. For a disc brake, Levy says you can loosen the caliper or fully remove it, and that if you remove it, "never let the caliper hang by its brake hose." For a drum brake, disconnect the linkage and note its adjustment. Gyroor says to loosen the brake cable or remove the caliper bolts carefully. I'd leave hydraulic brake lines alone; see my brake pads guide.
- Loosen the axle fasteners. Levy says to alternate sides. Gyroor says to hold the opposite side with a second wrench so the axle doesn't spin. Keep spacers and shims in order.
- Slide the wheel out of the dropouts. Gyroor says a rubber mallet can tap it loose if it sticks. Levy warns that bending the motor cable sharply can damage internal wiring and cause motor failure, so don't leave the wheel dangling from it.
If it is stuck. Levy says to use penetrating oil and wait 15 to 30 minutes, use the right tool size to avoid rounding bolt heads, and for stuck motor connectors use electrical contact cleaner and wiggle gently. If they still won't separate, see a professional. Don't force stuck connectors.
Chain or belt drive. Levy says to remove a chain via its master link or loosen the tensioner, and to loosen the adjuster on a belt. I have no further detail on those.
If your wheel has no motor, how to take the back wheel off an electric scooter is closer to the plain axle-nut steps in the next section, which Levy gives for the front wheel.
How to take the front wheel off an electric scooter#
How to take the front wheel off an electric scooter depends on whether the front wheel is a hub motor. Levy's front-wheel guide is a general overview and says nothing about motors, cables or brakes, so on a front hub-motor scooter use the rear-wheel steps above for the cable and brake, not this list. Levy's general steps:
- Make sure the scooter is powered off and unplugged from any charger, and stabilize it.
- Loosen the axle nut counterclockwise. It may take several turns.
- Remove any washers or spacers, which Levy defers to the manual for.
- Slide the wheel off the axle gently.
- If you are replacing the tire, work a tire lever or pliers around the edge until it comes off the rim.
Levy says to check your manual and its support center for hub motors, brakes and torque. I'd add, as opinion, that a front wheel with a disc caliper or fender should also have those parts moved aside or removed first.
How to put a back wheel on a scooter#
How to put a back wheel on a scooter, using Levy's reinstallation notes (Gyroor only says to reverse the removal steps):
- Clean and check. Clean the axle and dropouts and check the threads and bearings.
- Seat the wheel fully. Route the motor cable clear of pinch points.
- Refit spacers and shims in their original positions.
- Start the axle fasteners by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten alternately. Levy gives a typical range of "25-40 Nm / 18-30 ft-lbs," and says to check your model's manual. Gyroor gives no values. I can't tell you which is right for your scooter, so use your manual.
- Reconnect the motor cable with the correct orientation, and reconnect the brake.
- Test before riding. Spin the wheel for rubbing, check for side-to-side play, test the brakes, and take a short low-speed test ride.
Levy warns that under-tightened axle bolts can work loose during riding. If you are replacing the wheel rather than refitting the old one, I found no source on matching a replacement to your model, so ask the maker or a shop for the exact part. If the wheel came off for a puncture, my flat tire guide covers the tire work.
How to take off a scooter back wheel when it is stuck or seized#
If you are trying to work out how to take off a scooter back wheel that will not budge, Levy's stuck-parts advice is the useful part: penetrating oil, a 15 to 30 minute wait, the right tool size, and contact cleaner on motor connectors. Gyroor's tip is the rubber mallet and a second wrench on the opposite side. Neither source covers cutting, heating or forcing parts, and I wouldn't try.
If a connector still won't separate, Levy says to consult a professional. I agree. A cracked motor connector or a damaged cable is a more expensive fix than a shop visit.
Why is my scooter's back wheel not spinning?#
Why is my scooter's back wheel not spinning depends on whether the scooter is electric and whether the wheel spins by hand. The sources split into two:
Wheel stiff or stuck by hand. An iFixit student wiki page for a Razor scooter (user-contributed, for one model, so treat it as a lead) lists debris between the wheel and axle, a wheel bolt too tight or too loose, a chipped wheel, and a worn-flat wheel. Its fixes are cleaning and oiling after removal, adjusting the wheel bolt on both sides with an Allen wrench until it spins comfortably, and replacing a chipped or flattened wheel. Gyroor says to lift the scooter and spin the wheel by hand: if it is hard to turn or grinds, the motor or bearings may be damaged.
Wheel spins freely but the scooter won't move. Gyroor's page on a scooter that turns on but won't move lists the throttle, the brake sensor, the motor, the controller, wiring, the battery and firmware. It says to make sure brake levers are fully released and to inspect or adjust the sensors, and to see a professional for a suspected controller fault. That page doesn't cover mechanical brake drag or a jammed wheel in detail. My advice, as opinion, is to leave the electrical items to a shop.
Frequently asked questions#
How to put a back wheel on a scooter?#
Reverse the removal: clean the axle, seat the wheel, refit spacers, tighten the axle fasteners alternately, reconnect motor cable and brake, then test.
How to remove the rear wheel on an electric scooter?#
Power off, unplug the motor cable at the connector, deal with the brake, loosen the axle fasteners and slide the wheel out of the dropouts.
How to take the back wheel off an electric scooter without a hub motor?#
Levy's general steps: loosen the axle nut, remove washers and spacers, and slide the wheel off. Check your manual.
How to take the front wheel off an electric scooter?#
Levy's overview says to loosen the axle nut, remove spacers and slide the wheel off, but it doesn't cover hub motors or brakes.
How to take off a scooter back wheel that is stuck?#
Levy says to use penetrating oil and wait 15 to 30 minutes, use the right tool size and consult a professional if connectors won't separate.
Why is my scooter's back wheel not spinning?#
Possible causes are debris, a bolt too tight or loose, a chipped or flattened wheel, brake drag, or electrical faults.
What torque should the axle nuts be?#
Levy gives a typical 25-40 Nm range and says to check your manual. Gyroor gives none.
Do I have to disconnect the brake?#
Levy and Gyroor both say to deal with a disc or drum brake before removing the rear wheel.
Can I pull the motor cable?#
No. Levy and Gyroor say to disconnect at the connector, not by pulling the wires.
Do I need to remove the battery?#
Levy says to if it is removable, and Gyroor says disconnect it if possible. Don't open a sealed battery housing.
Can I change a tire without removing the wheel?#
The guides I read all take the wheel off first. See the flat tire guide.
The bottom line#
How to put a back wheel on a scooter comes down to a clean axle, spacers in their original order, even axle tightening to your manual's value, a correctly reconnected motor cable and brake, and a test before you ride. Take the cable and brake step slowly, and let a shop do it if anything looks damaged or stuck. See also the brake pads guide.
