What e bikes are made in the USA? Fewer than the marketing suggests. In every source I found, the motor, the battery cells or both are imported, so "Made in USA" on an e-bike usually means US design, a US-built frame, or US final assembly, and nobody I read claims a fully American bike. The brand-by-brand claims also disagree with each other, so I list where.

I haven't ridden or tested any of these bikes, and I can't verify factories. This page uses the Federal Trade Commission's labeling guidance, Wikipedia, and six commercial or forum sources (sellers, retailers, a review site and a forum). Most of those make unsourced claims, so treat brand lines as claims to confirm with the maker. Companies change, and one brand in these sources went bankrupt in 2025.

What Made in USA actually means#

The FTC's guidance says a product can be called Made in USA without qualification only if it is "all or virtually all" made in the United States, with "no - or negligible - foreign content." Final assembly or processing must be domestic, and significant processing and key components must be US-made. The FTC's 2021 Labeling Rule applies this to labels and to online Made in USA seals, and the page says marketers are now subject to civil penalties for unqualified claims that don't meet it. (The page notes that the guidance reflects staff's view and isn't binding on the Commission.)

"Assembled in USA" is a different claim. The FTC says it can be used without qualification when the product's principal assembly takes place in the US and the assembly is a substantial transformation; a simple screwdriver assembly of foreign components usually doesn't qualify. It also says qualified claims, such as "Made in USA of U.S. and imported parts," should be avoided unless there is a significant amount of US content or processing.

So when you ask what e bikes are made in the USA, the honest answer depends on which phrase the brand uses. Opinion: "designed in California" says nothing about where the bike is built, and even one of the retailer guides I read says that phrase is vague.

What is imported on almost every e-bike#

Every source that addresses it says the same thing about the electrical parts. A retailer guide says batteries, motors and electronics are "almost always imported." Another says true Made in USA e-bikes are rare because battery cells are almost exclusively imported. A seller's guide says motors, lithium-ion cells and advanced gear systems are mostly designed and made in Europe and Asia, and names Bosch, Shimano and Bafang as example motor suppliers. A forum poster in 2019 said cables, connectors, chains, tires and tubes are also hard to source domestically.

What I did not find: a sourced breakdown of how much of any specific e-bike's cost or content is American. So any percentage claim from a brand deserves a question.

Brand claims, and where they conflict#

This is the part where the sources disagree, so I show each claim and don't pick one:

  • Electric Bike Company (California). Called assembled or built in the USA by three sources. One adds that it sources components from around the world.
  • Pedego. One shop's article says final assembly, finishing and inspection happen in the USA, with many components from global partners. A different article says it is built in Taiwan or Vietnam. A 2018 forum post said its design is American and its bikes and components are imported.
  • Aventon. One retailer guide says US assembly (the Level.2 "Assembled in the U.S."). Another article says it is manufactured at its China plant.
  • Ride1Up. One guide says the Core-5 is "Assembled in California." Another says it is designed in the USA and built in China.
  • Rad Power Bikes. Wikipedia says it designs its products in Seattle and doesn't say where they're built; one guide says US assembly, another says built in China. Wikipedia also records that the company filed for Chapter 11 in December 2025 and was acquired in early 2026, renamed Rad Life Mobility, so check its current status and warranty terms before buying.
  • Specialized. One article says designed in California and made by Merida in Taiwan; another says "US assembly for some models" while also calling it almost entirely overseas.
  • Trek. One article says the Waterloo, Wisconsin factory still produces bikes but that what Trek "build[s]" in the US is mostly assembled. Wikipedia says nearly all Trek bicycles are made outside the US and, in a section tagged with no source, that "no 'production' Trek bikes are made in America at this time." It also says some Taiwan-made high-end frames are painted and fitted with parts in Wisconsin under Trek's Project One custom program.

Sellers' lists of small US makers are, again, their own claims. Voltaire Cycles of Central Oregon is both the author and a listed brand in one. The same article lists Hi Power Cycles (in-house design, welding, painting, assembly and battery-system assembly), Wyatt Bicycles (Bangor, Wisconsin, frames built in-house), Black Rock Bikes, and Pedego. Another guide names Detroit Bikes and Worksman Cycles as manufactured and assembled in the USA and Hi-Power Cycles as "mostly made in USA," and a third lists Allied Cycle Works and Portland builders only through video titles. I couldn't confirm any of these from the makers or independent reporting.

Frame-built versus assembled in the USA#

Best-supported distinction across the sources: a bike can be (1) designed in the US, (2) assembled in the US from imported parts, (3) built around a US-made frame with imported motor and battery, or (4) mostly US-made. One seller's guide describes these as a spectrum and says a 100% American-made e-bike is "extremely rare." A bike-brand site says "Made in the USA" in cycling usually refers to the frame, with drivetrains and tires typically imported (it does not address e-bike frames).

Opinion: category (3) is the realistic ceiling today, and category (2) is still real work, with local assembly, testing and warranty service. I wouldn't treat either as a safety guarantee.

What to ask before you buy#

My checklist, built on the sources:

  • Which phrase is on the bike: made, built, assembled, or designed in the USA? Ask for it in writing.
  • Where is the frame made, and where is it assembled? Where are the motor and battery cells made?
  • Is the battery certified to UL 2849? A seller's guide suggests checking this. (I haven't verified UL listing claims for any brand.)
  • If the brand has had financial trouble, what happens to warranty and parts? Rad Power's 2025 bankruptcy is the example in these sources.
  • Does the bike's price reflect US labor, or is it a marketing premium? I found no sourced price comparison, so I give none.

For models to compare after that, see my best electric bike brands guide.

Frequently asked questions#

What e bikes are made in the USA?#

No source I found says any e-bike is fully American. Claims for Electric Bike Company, Hi Power Cycles, Wyatt, Detroit Bikes and Worksman are brand or retailer claims, and they cover assembly or frames, not motors and cells.

What does Made in USA mean on an e-bike?#

Legally, the FTC says all or virtually all of the product must be made in the US. In practice, most e-bike claims are qualified.

What is the difference between made in USA and assembled in USA?#

Per the FTC, assembled requires principal US assembly that is a substantial transformation; made requires all or virtually all US content.

Is Trek made in the USA?#

Wikipedia says nearly all Trek bicycles are made outside the US and no production Trek bikes are made in America, a statement it leaves unsourced.

Are Rad Power bikes made in the USA?#

Sources conflict: Wikipedia says designed in Seattle; retailer guides say US assembly or built in China.

Are e-bike batteries made in the USA?#

The sources say cells are almost always imported. I found no brand with a sourced US-cell claim.

Are American-made e-bikes more expensive?#

A seller says higher US labor and materials raise prices, but gives no data. I found no sourced price comparison.

The bottom line#

What e bikes are made in the USA: none fully, per the sources, and a few brands build frames or assemble in the US with imported motors and cells. The brand claims conflict, so ask where the frame, motor and battery are made and get the answer in writing. Then see my best electric bikes guide.
